The Day It Rained

But today, something different happened.
Today, it rained. And it poured. It was so bad, that court was cancelled. Disgruntled by the change in schedule, Miles returned to his office, and settled to do his usual amount of paperwork.
But when he arrived, the paperwork was finished.
Today, his new secretary was helping. Hannah Fright had sealed up everything, and left Miles with nothing to do. He had no trial, no investigation, not even paperwork. With this development, he returned home, ready to relax.
But today, his phone rang.
Today, as Miles was settling in his house, the phone had gone off. A call from Maya Fey, of all people. Miles answered, though he didn’t know what he was getting into.
“Miles Edgeworth speaking.”
“Mr. Edgeworth? Do you know where Nick is? He left when it started raining, and he hasn’t come back! He didn’t even take his wallet, and I’m worried about him.”
“I’m afraid I don’t know. However, I will look into it, I promise.”
After that, he called Detective Gumshoe, and told him to keep an eye out for Phoenix Wright.
Gumshoe never found him.
That night, Miles fell asleep. The next morning, he woke, and his day became usuals. Usual table, with usual coffee, in usual shop, with usual newspaper, and usual half an hour before court. Usual paperwork, usual investigation, usual solving the case.
There were no surprises, and Miles liked that. For a long time, his life became constants. Everything happened, day after day, and Miles became sick of it, after a while.
And then one day, it rained again.
His phone rang, and it wasn’t news of a case. It was Maya Fey.
“Miles Edgeworth speaking.”
“Mr. Edgeworth… It’s been so long. Did they ever find Nick?”
“I-I’m afraid not. We put all our energy into finding him, but they can’t find anything.”
“It’s been five years. There’s nothing.”
Five years?
Miles paused. Five years had gone by. Five years since Maya Fey had called, and reported. Five years of the same routine, and Miles never thinking about it. Five years of constants, and usuals.
“They never found him. I’m sorry.”
“I miss him.”
Maya Fey hung up the phone. Miles planned his own investigation.
He didn’t expect it to take him onto the roof of the Wright & Co. Law Offices.
Hidden in the ventilation shaft, was a large shape, in a blue suit.
And in that blue suit, was one very dead Phoenix Wright.
Miles had pulled his body out, and tears began falling. As he rummaged through the pockets, he found three things. An empty bottle of pills, Phoenix’s Magatama, and a note.
To Whoever Finds Me (Probably Maya, or Miles),
Surprise. I bet you didn’t notice. So caught up in your worlds of constants, that you didn’t notice something odd. I’m dead now, and there’s nothing you can do about it. I overdosed on the pills. I wanted to die, so I did. It worked. And nobody noticed. Who would?
Why would you notice it? There’s no reason. I don’t mind. I was always kind of abused. It works with me, really. You didn’t cause me to die, I wanted it. I’ve wanted to die since I was born. Some people just aren’t meant to live. You would know Miles, you would.
Maya, I’m sorry. I know you actually gave a fuck about me when it mattered. It’s a bit overdue now, but my wallet is all yours. The burgers are waiting for you.
Miles, take the Magatama. You’ve seen what it does, and you know how it works. I want you to find the truth. Don’t let there be another case like mine. Find who is guilty, and get them for it. Break every lock, because I know you can do it. Don’t let the flame die out.
Tell Pearls that I care about her. I didn’t want it to have to be this way, but it is.
Thank you all for somehow putting up with me for all these years.
Defence Attorney Phoenix Wright chooses death.
Clutching Phoenix’s body, Miles sobbed. He sobbed until there were no more tears, just the pain of his heart breaking. It rained again that day, with the rain coming down harder and harder, drenching Miles to the bone. It hadn’t rained like this since that day, five years ago, when Phoenix Wright died.
That night, Miles broke down, and told the truth to Maya. They cried together, and eventually, he handed off the Magatama to her. He figured she’d need it more than he would, where he was going.
The next morning, at 11:49am, Detective Gumshoe entered Miles Edgeworth’s office. He found a note on the desk, and a body suspended from the ceiling. Hanged by guilt, as it were. Some took it metaphorically, others took it literally.
But the note made everything crystal clear.
Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth really chooses death.
